Sarah Canney: Running Coach and CHaD Mom
For Sarah Canney, running took on a new meaning in 2012 when her son Jack became a patient at CHaD. Born with a congenital skin defect that left him vulnerable to neurological complications and melanoma, Jack received care at CHaD in his first year of life. During that time Sarah began fundraising and training to run the CHaD HERO. She ran for Jack for the first time in 2013 and has participated in nearly every CHaD HERO event over the past decade, running either the 5K or the half marathon and raising over $23,000.
This year, Sarah is back as “Coach,” lending over a decade of her experience as a certified running coach through RRCA and USATF to help runners and walkers train for this year’s CHaD HERO Event.
Sarah ran her first marathon in 2003 and since then has competed at many distances from 5K to Ultras. She represented the United States at the World Snowshoe Running Championship in 2019, 2020 (winning a bronze medal), and most recently in 2024, and has had top finishes at many of the local mountain races, including 13th overall female at the Mt. Washington Road Race in 2021.
