Why We Prouty: A Family Fight, A Legacy of Strength
Cancer has touched three generations of my family—and this year, we’re taking on The Prouty to honor that journey and help change the future of cancer care.
Years ago, we lost my grandmother to pancreatic cancer—despite the exceptional care she received at Dartmouth, it was a devastating loss that still shapes our family. Then, just two years ago, during the heart of my Physician Assistant training, my mom was diagnosed with aggressive triple negative breast cancer. In the middle of learning how to care for others, I was suddenly facing the hardest kind of reality: watching someone I love fight for her life.
She fought through chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation with extraordinary strength. She rang the bell at her last chemotherapy infusion - an unforgettable moment that marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of healing. Today she is a survivor—and she’ll be walking The Prouty with us this year to celebrate that.
My grandfather is a survivor too. His lung cancer was found early—during what was then a research study at Dartmouth. That same study has now become national USPSTF screening guideline, saving countless lives through early detection. His story is proof of what cancer research can achieve.
This year, I’m taking on the 50-mile Prouty Ride in honor of all three of them:
— In memory of my grandmother
— In celebration of my mother and grandfather
— And in support of every family still fighting
We’re raising funds for Dartmouth Cancer Center, where cutting-edge research and compassionate care are changing lives—like they did for mine.
Every mile we walk or ride makes a difference.
Let’s Prouty—for hope, for healing, for the future.

I am registered for the Prouty in 2021.
