Doing all I can to keep fighting for a cure
Last year, I took my first steps in the Prouty at the very start of my six weeks of radiation. It was a moment filled with determination and pride—walking among others who understood the battles being fought, who shared the quiet strength that comes with facing uncertainty. Though my body was enduring intense treatment, my spirit was fueled by the unwavering support of family and friends. That walk wasn’t just about crossing a finish line; it was about proving to myself that I was strong enough to push forward.
This year, I will walk again, but under different circumstances. After undergoing major breast reconstruction, the journey has changed, yet the road remains long. While much of it is now behind me, there are still challenges ahead—steps yet to be taken, healing still to come. I returned to work at Marist in the fall semester and was surprised at how much my body still needed time and space to heal. Thankfully, my incredible work family helped make the year as successful as ever. In fact, in the academic spring semester, we pushed ourselves even further as a choral and individual vocal music team. Additionally, my care team at Vassar—my oncologist, surgeon, reconstructive surgeon, and the multitude of nurses—have surrounded me with positivity, empathy, and smiles, becoming my very own cheerleading squad.
What I have learned: When your world revolves around music—its demands, its discipline, its relentless pursuit of excellence—it’s easy to prioritize the art over your own well-being. But giving yourself grace, learning to listen to your body as deeply as you listen to your music, is an incredible step forward. Rest isn’t a pause; it’s a crucial part of sustaining the journey. Your ability to recognize that and honor it speaks to a newfound balance—one that allows both your craft and your health to thrive. That kind of wisdom is just as powerful as any note sung or played.
That is why private fundraising is more crucial now than ever. For those just starting their battle, resources and community make all the difference. The Prouty is about more than just endurance, it’s about lifting each other up, offering hope where it is needed most. If you’re able, please consider donating to the Williams Warriors. Your support helps ensure that no one must walk this path alone.

I am registered for the Prouty Walk in 2021.
